Easy access terms explained
AER
AER stands for ‘Annual Equivalent Rate’ and shows what the interest rate would be if interest was paid and compounded once each year. ‘Compounded’ refers to interest being added on to previously earned interest. AER can help you compare interest rates on different accounts, regardless of how often interest is added to the account.
Gross p.a.
Gross p.a. (per annum) means gross interest per year. It shows the rate payable without tax taken off.
Unlike the AER, the gross rate doesn’t assume that interest is paid and compounded only once a year, so for accounts that pay interest more often (for example, monthly), the gross rate will be lower than the AER.
Savings FAQs
For savings accounts, the interest rate tells you how much interest we’ll pay you for saving with us – it’s shown as a percentage of your account balance. The higher the interest rate, the more interest you’ll earn by leaving money in the account.
